SOD: Foundation Students Explore Traditional Crafts at Karigar Bazaar
On 11 September 2026, the Department of Foundation (B.Des. and B.Sc. MM), under the School of Design, organised an educational excursion to Karigar Bazaar at Jayamahal Palace. The industrial visit was coordinated by Ms Nivrity Sinha (SPOC), along with faculty members Bhagya, Harish, Krishnakant Bhole, Aditya D and Shijith.
The visit primarily focused on the Semester 1 Foundation cohort and involved 89 B.Des. students, accompanied by faculty members. It aimed to bridge classroom learning with real-world craft practices by immersing students in a vibrant marketplace showcasing traditional artisanship.
The excursion complemented core courses such as DES 1201: Story Crafting and DES 1203: Media, Material Perception & Multimedia, providing first-year students with opportunities to observe traditional artisanal practices firsthand. Students explored diverse raw materials, engaged with local craft traditions and experienced how storytelling can be expressed through tangible materials and creative mediums.
The immersive environment offered valuable insights into the relationship between raw materials, design elements and cultural narratives, helping students develop a foundational understanding of their interconnectedness within the broader design landscape.
