Prof. (Dr.) Md Sameeruddin Khan
Dean, School of Information Science
Dear Students,
Welcome to the School of Information Science! The field of Information Science has emerged as one of the most advanced branches of science. Its futuristic concepts have attracted students to a plethora of job opportunities that require unique skill sets with the utmost professional integrity.
As the school focuses on creating industry-ready professionals, the programs offered are designed to be futuristic in nature. Bachelor's degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science are designed with the most advanced curriculum, allowing students to learn the know-how of these highly in-demand subjects. In their first year, students are introduced to Business Problem Statements using a coding platform such as CodeChef or HackerRank. This method goes beyond the curriculum to provide a practical approach in computer laboratories. More than 8,000 students and faculty have received certifications through this program. To add to this achievement, the school has also initiated discussions with the World Records Forum by submitting the accomplishments for recognition.
The introduction of the DQAC (Departmental Quality Assurance Committee) in the school has helped to ensure academic quality, with all programs and labs being graded and faculty performance being monitored. The school has signed an MoU with a Switzerland-based company, through which 2,800 students have received training and certification from the Global AI Hub in the areas of AI and Data Science. Additionally, the school has collaborations with IITs and prominent industries, connecting students and faculty for labs, summer training, and industry-based certification training.
The faculties are trained at IIT Madras for two weeks in XR/AR and VR technologies, where they have also initiated discussions on establishing a Center of Excellence (CoE) in XR (Extended Reality) at the School of Information Science. The school has created a robust ecosystem for research and development, resulting in the publication of various research papers, books, and book chapters in high-quality journals. Currently, there are over 100 research scholars pursuing their Ph.D. programs at the school. The students of Information Science undergo specialized training on par with engineering students, enabling them to pursue highly skilled job opportunities in their respective fields. Computer labs specialized in Information Security provide hands-on experience for students in this specific field. The school is currently planning to establish an extended wing called Digital Forensics in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Department of Karnataka State and NASCOM.
During the 6th semester, the school identifies fast learners and conducts specialized training called Super-60 to prepare them for employability in careers with higher pay packages. Additionally, regular higher cognitive-level skill-based activities like CODEATHON and hands-on training with modern software tools are conducted for these selected students. Students can also enroll in various clubs provided by the school, where they can nurture their talents and polish their skills in various advanced technologies. Artificial Intelligence and Data Science are set to rule most industries. Pursuing a course in these specializations not only ensures job opportunities but also allows you to be part of the futuristic world ahead.
