The Presidency University Language Lab, housed within the Presidency School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (PSOLAS), has officially commenced its operations for the Academic Year 2026–27. Serving students across the University, the Language Lab is a key academic initiative aimed at strengthening English language proficiency and communication skills among first-year students.

The inaugural session was held on 16 September 2026, with a diagnostic test administered to first-semester students of the Presidency School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Design. This assessment marks the first step in a carefully designed, student-centric language development programme, which will progressively extend to first-semester students across other schools of the University, including the School of Engineering and the School of Computer Science and Engineering, as well as the remaining cohorts of the School of Design.

The diagnostic test is designed to assess students’ existing proficiency in English across the four core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, the Language Lab will use the diagnostic results to identify individual learning needs and develop appropriate learning pathways. Subsequent sessions will therefore focus on addressing specific areas for improvement while building on each student’s existing strengths.

At the heart of this initiative is a simple but important principle: every learner deserves personalised attention. By meeting students at their current level of proficiency, the Language Lab seeks to build confidence, bridge language gaps, and equip students with the communication skills essential for academic achievement, employability, and professional success.

As the programme expands across the University in the coming weeks, the Presidency School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, through the Language Lab, will continue to support students from diverse academic disciplines and linguistic backgrounds. The initiative reflects Presidency University’s commitment to holistic and student-centred education, empowering learners across the University to communicate confidently and effectively.
