The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Presidency University, successfully organised the “National Skill Hackathon on Fitting and Sheet Metal Practices 2026” on 30 April 2026 from 9.30 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. at the Metrology and Measurement Laboratory, E Block, First Floor. Conducted in offline mode, the event was open to participants from both within and outside the University. The hackathon was designed as a practical, skill-based engineering competition aimed at enhancing the technical competencies of students in fitting and sheet metal practices. Working in teams of four, participants applied their theoretical knowledge in a workshop environment by performing operations such as cutting, shaping, bending, filing, assembling and finishing metal components within a stipulated time frame.

The event featured multiple phases, including fabrication, assembly and final finishing, where students demonstrated precision, teamwork, creativity and effective time management. Participants undertook challenging tasks such as fabricating conical hoppers with support brackets, square-to-round transition ducts and interlocking sheet metal trays. The hackathon provided valuable hands-on exposure to measurement techniques, precision fitting, metal forming and component assembly, reflecting real industrial manufacturing practices. In addition to strengthening practical engineering skills, the event fostered innovation, collaboration, leadership and problem-solving abilities, preparing students for future careers in mechanical engineering, manufacturing and production industries.
