How to Become an Architect After 12th: Courses and Exams
If you love sketching buildings, notice how light falls through a window or wonder why some spaces feel calm and others cramped, architecture may be calling. Students often ask how to become an architect after 12th, and the short answer is a recognised five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), an aptitude test and registration with the Council of Architecture (COA). This guide explains each step, as of October 2026.
Eligibility after Class 12
The eligibility for B.Arch is set by the COA (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education) Regulations, 2020, as reproduced in the NATA 2026 brochure. You must have passed Class 12 or equivalent with:
- Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects
- One more subject from Chemistry, Biology, a technical vocational subject, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics or Business Studies
- At least 45% marks in aggregate
A 10+3 diploma with Mathematics as a compulsory subject and at least 45% aggregate is also accepted. States and institutions may set higher cut-offs, so check your state’s admission notice.
Architecture courses
B.Arch. The five-year Bachelor of Architecture is the professional degree that leads to registration as an architect. It must be from an institution and programme recognised by the Council of Architecture.
B.Plan. A Bachelor of Planning focuses on cities, regions, transport and land use, and leads to urban planning rather than registration as an architect.
Design pathways. Space or interior design degrees are not a substitute for a B.Arch. Presidency University does not offer B.Arch. Its B.Des Space Design is a four-year design programme on interiors, exteriors and exhibition and museum layouts, suited to students drawn to designing spaces who do not need to qualify as architects. Our guide to design courses after 12th compares design disciplines.
Entrance exams
Under COA regulations, you must qualify an aptitude test in architecture for B.Arch admission: either NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A. Admission is then made by state counselling authorities or institutions, using these scores and Class 12 marks.
NATA. The National Aptitude Test in Architecture is conducted by the COA and tests drawing, visual perception, aesthetic sensitivity and reasoning. As of October 2026, NATA 2027 dates have not been announced; check the NATA website.
JEE Main Paper 2A. Conducted by the National Testing Agency, Paper 2A is used for B.Arch admission at NITs and many other institutions. For 2027, Session 1 applications are open from 24 October to 22 November 2026, with exams on 20–24 and 28 January 2027 and a second session in April 2027, according to the NTA JEE Main website.
Step-by-step architect path
1. Qualify for admission. Take Physics and Mathematics in Class 11 and 12, practise drawing regularly and prepare for NATA, JEE Main Paper 2A or both.
2. Complete B.Arch studio and practical training. The design studio is the heart of the degree: each semester you take a project, from a small house to a complex public building, through research, concept and detailed drawings. You also learn construction, structures, building services, CAD and BIM, and complete practical training in an architect’s office, usually before your final thesis.
3. Register with the COA. Under section 37 of the Architects Act, 1972, only registered architects may use the title “architect”. The Supreme Court explained in 2020 that the Act protects the title rather than reserving all design work for registered architects, but registration is what lets you call yourself an architect.
Career options
- Architecture firms: Junior architect, then project architect and associate
- Own practice: Many architects set up independent studios after gaining experience
- Specialist design: Interior architecture, landscape, conservation and sustainable design
- Public sector and related fields: Development authorities, public works departments, BIM coordination, visualisation and teaching
Frequently asked questions
Is NATA compulsory for B.Arch admission?
You must qualify either NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A. Which one you need depends on the institution and state counselling process.
How many years does it take to become an architect?
The B.Arch takes five years, including practical training. You then register with the COA.
Can commerce students pursue architecture?
Only if they studied Physics and Mathematics in Class 12. Business Studies can count as the third subject.
What is the difference between B.Arch and B.Plan?
B.Arch is a five-year professional degree in designing buildings that leads to COA registration. B.Plan covers cities and regions and leads to careers in urban planning.
Conclusion
Architecture suits students who enjoy drawing and spatial problem-solving, are comfortable with Physics and Mathematics and are ready for five years of demanding studio work. If that describes you, act now: keep Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, apply for JEE Main Paper 2A by 22 November 2026 if you plan to take it, watch for the NATA 2027 announcement and apply only to colleges whose B.Arch is COA-approved for your year of admission. When comparing colleges, check studio facilities, practising faculty and how practical training is arranged. If you love designing spaces but do not need the title “architect”, compare a space or interior design degree instead.
