Dental Courses After 12th: Options and Eligibility

Every year, many NEET aspirants find that their rank may not be enough for MBBS and start looking seriously at dentistry. Others want to work in dental care without spending five years on a degree. Both groups ask the same thing: what dental courses after 12th are actually available, and which ones need NEET? This guide explains the main options, the eligibility rules as of October 2026 and how to choose between them.

Dental education after Class 12

There are two broad pathways:

  • Becoming a dentist: the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), followed by registration and, if you wish, a postgraduate Master of Dental Surgery (MDS)
  • Allied dental care: shorter diploma courses that train dental hygienists and dental mechanics (laboratory technicians who make crowns, dentures and appliances)

Dental education is regulated by the National Dental Commission (NDC), which replaced the Dental Council of India in March 2026 and still uses the dciindia.gov.in website. Older DCI regulations apply until the NDC issues new ones.

Presidency University does not offer dental programmes, so use this guide to compare colleges yourself.

Eligibility criteria

For BDS, the course regulations require:

  • A pass in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English individually in Class 12
  • At least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Biotechnology taken together (40% for SC, ST and OBC candidates; 45% for candidates with a lower-limb locomotor disability)
  • A place in the NEET-UG merit list, in addition to the qualifying percentile
  • A minimum age of 17 on or before 31 December of the admission year, as set out in the NEET-UG 2026 information bulletin, with no upper age limit

For dental diplomas, colleges generally ask for Class 12 science, often with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and a minimum percentage; rules differ, so read each prospectus.

Entrance and admission

NEET-UG, conducted by the National Testing Agency, is compulsory for BDS. After the results, BDS seats are filled through counselling:

1. All-India quota and central seats. The Medical Counselling Committee runs counselling for 15% all-India quota seats in government colleges and for central and deemed university seats.

2. State quota seats. State authorities run their own counselling; in Karnataka, this is the Karnataka Examinations Authority.

In 2026, counselling ran in four rounds, ending on 26 October. The 2027 dates will follow the NEET-UG 2027 result, so check the NTA and MCC websites from early 2027.

What you will study

BDS starts with basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology and dental materials, then moves to clinical subjects such as prosthodontics, orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery, with supervised patient treatment in the later years. Hygiene diplomas focus on scaling and preventive care; mechanics diplomas focus on laboratory work for dentures, crowns and bridges.

Career options in dental healthcare

  • Clinical practice: dental clinics, hospital dental departments or, after experience, your own practice
  • Public health: community oral health programmes and government dental surgeon posts, subject to recruitment notices
  • Specialisation and teaching: an MDS, which also opens teaching in dental colleges
  • Allied roles: dental hygienists in clinics and outreach programmes; dental mechanics in dental laboratories. In October 2026, the NDC told dentists to use only laboratory services from dental mechanics who hold a recognised qualification and are registered with a State Dental Council, so a recognised diploma matters

Frequently asked questions

Is NEET compulsory for every dental course?

No. NEET-UG is compulsory for BDS. The dental hygiene and dental mechanics diplomas are usually filled on Class 12 merit.

How long does it take to complete BDS?

Five years: four academic years and a one-year compulsory rotatory internship.

Conclusion

First decide whether you want to be a dentist or work in a supporting dental role:

  • Choose BDS if you want to diagnose and treat patients independently and are ready for NEET-UG and five years of study
  • Choose a dental hygiene or dental mechanics diploma if you want a shorter route into a supporting role without NEET

Before you commit, confirm NDC recognition for the year you join, check the current NEET-UG bulletin and your state’s counselling rules, ask about patient flow in the college’s dental hospital and compare the full five-year BDS cost, including hostel and instruments.
