“My Exchange Semester at Aalen University (Germany)”
I am a Bachelor’s student in Information Science and Technology at Presidency University and I am currently doing my 5th semester at Aalen university in Germany. It was one day which changed the course of my Bachelor’s study, it was when I walked into The Office of International Affairs (OIA) at Presidency university and met Sai Prasanna ma’am (Manager - International Affairs) to enquire about the semester exchange program offered in the university. I was interested in the program and my parents had given me the permission to opt for the exchange program. I even received help from ma’am to apply for the “Baden-Württemberg-Stipendium für Studierende” a prestigious scholarship offered to the international students who are willing to study in Germany.
After the application process in Presidency University, I had received the invitation letter from Aalen University and I was even awarded the BWS scholarship for 4 months which greatly motivated me as well as helped me in covering my living expenses after coming to Germany. It was all set for my first international experience, with all the determination, curiosity and excitement I packed my suitcases and took the flight to Frankfurt and landed in Germany. Took the train to Aalen and reached my room safely.
I attended the orientation session organized by the International office at Aalen University where I got the information about how the university works, how to register at the city center, how to get the German bank account, the sim and other valuable information. There was even a campus tour organized where I got to know about the locations of the different facilities at the university.
Aalen University also has this really cool Buddy program where a buddy is allocated to you based on your interests so that the buddy is always there to guide you throughout your journey at Aalen. For instance, my buddy was really kind to pick up the keys for my room at the scheduled time slot and pick me up from train station as my train got delayed by an hour! Aalen university makes you feel comfortable and relaxed, gives you time to get adjusted with the German ecosystem and the International office here is always there to help you out.
The university has great professors and courses where you can explore the field you like and if any doubts arise during your study the professors are always there to clear it. The professors encourage us to participate in various group activities and presentations which has improved my communication skills and the ability to work in a team. The professors explain us the concepts which are available in the course by relating it to the knowledge which they have gained while working in the industry.
The examination system at Aalen University is not only based on the final exam which is conducted at the end of the semester but there are continuous assignments, tasks and quizzes conducted on a regular basis which keeps us engaged with the course ultimately resulting in the better understanding of the concepts we have learned in the course.
Beyond the classroom, Aalen University has given me the opportunity to connect with students from various nationalities and backgrounds and my interactions with them has deeply broadened my understanding about the world. I have also had the chance to explore the German culture and learn the basics of German language which is really important in Germany. Aalen University also offers German language course for international students so that they can improve their German language.
In conclusion, my exchange semester in Germany would be a very valuable experience for me. I believe that the learnings and experiences I have gained during this semester would greatly help me to build connections, see the world from a new perspective and help me improve my personality overall.
Furthermore, I would like to thank Presidency University for providing me this wonderful opportunity to enhance my learning. I believe that this experience during my semester exchange will be carried on throughout my career.
