Workshop on Critical Thinking and Writing in Humanities Research

13-September-2025

Presidency School of Liberal Arts & Sciences conducted a workshop on "Critical Thinking to Critical Writing: Bridging the Gap in Humanities Research" on September 13, 2025. The event brought together research scholars and faculty members across disciplines to explore the essential connection between critical thinking, interdisciplinarity, and effective academic writing.

The first speaker, Dr. Sushma V. Murthy, delivered a session on the topic "From Interdisciplinarity to Post-Disciplinarity – Rewriting Research in the Humanities". Dr. Murthy traced the evolution of disciplines, questioning whether specialisation limits knowledge creation. She stressed interdisciplinarity as key to collaboration, real-world research, and post-disciplinary possibilities.

The second speaker, Dr. Vijaylakshmi, conducted an interactive and participatory workshop, "Critical Thinking to Critical Writing". Dr. Vijayalakshmi stressed that critical thinking entails recognising diverse perspectives while avoiding common fallacies such as hasty generalisations. Participants explored problem-solving and cubing methods as tools for academic writing, focusing on developing voice, evaluating evidence, and advancing from description to critical analysis.

The workshop not only bridged the gap between critical thinking and writing but also opened up possibilities for reimagining humanities research through interdisciplinary and post-disciplinary frameworks.
