SOMS | Media Visit to Asianet Suvarna News Introduces Students to Newsroom Operations
As part of the Deeksharambh 2026 Orientation Programme, the School of Media Studies (SOMS) organised an industrial visit to Asianet Suvarna News on 13 July 2026, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, for first-semester BA Journalism and Mass Communication (BAJMC) students.
Coordinated by Dr Garima Ganghariya, Mr Sherin P. Shaji, Dr Musheera Ashraf, and Mr Nishan Poojary, the visit provided students with their first exposure to the functioning of a professional news channel. Suvarna News, a prominent Kannada news channel, was established in 2008 and has a significant presence in Karnataka’s media landscape.
The primary objective of the visit was to connect classroom learning with real-world media practice by familiarising students with the functioning and production processes of a professional news channel.
During the visit, students observed live news anchoring and streaming and gained insights into the studio, its functions, and the Production Control Room (PCR). They also experienced the fast-paced newsroom environment and learnt about the roles of various teams, including the Digital, Editing, and Photography teams.
In the studio, students had the opportunity to attempt news anchoring using a teleprompter, experiencing first-hand the importance of attentiveness, quick decision-making, and preparedness in a dynamic news environment. They also captured photographs, documented stories, and recorded their experiences during the visit.
Overall, the industrial visit encouraged active participation and provided students with an engaging and insightful introduction to professional news production.
