SOLAS Hosts Rajdeep Sardesai for Aurora 2026 Special Guest Address

18-June-2026

The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Presidency University, Bengaluru, had the privilege of hosting Mr Rajdeep Sardesai, eminent journalist, author and public intellectual, as the Special Guest for the Orientation Programme of undergraduate students. The event formed part of Aurora 2026, the University’s orientation programme for the incoming batch of students.

The programme was graced by Dr Nafeesa Ahmed, Director, Presidency Group of Institutions; Dr Pritha Sanyal, Head of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences; along with Deans and Heads of Departments from other schools, faculty members, and the newly admitted undergraduate students of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

In his address, Mr Sardesai spoke with great clarity and conviction about the significance of liberal arts education in the contemporary world. He emphasised that liberal arts education is not merely about acquiring disciplinary knowledge, but about learning to think critically, question responsibly, and engage meaningfully with society. He encouraged students to recognise the importance of intellectual curiosity, ethical reasoning and open dialogue in shaping both their academic and personal journeys.

A central focus of his address was the importance of dissent, debate and democracy. Mr Sardesai highlighted that a vibrant democratic society depends on the ability of inpiduals to disagree, debate and listen to one another with respect. He reminded students that the university is a space where ideas must be tested, assumptions questioned, and perse perspectives welcomed. In this context, he underlined the special responsibility of students of liberal arts and sciences to cultivate independent thinking and democratic values.

Following the address, an interactive session was held with the students. The interaction provided them with an opportunity to engage directly with Mr Sardesai on questions related to journalism, public life, media, democracy and the future of liberal arts education. The session was lively and intellectually stimulating, reflecting the curiosity and enthusiasm of the new undergraduate cohort.

The event marked a meaningful beginning to the students’ academic journey, offering both inspiration and direction. Mr Sardesai’s presence and reflections reinforced the vision of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences as a space committed to critical inquiry, democratic engagement and holistic education. The programme concluded with a strong sense of optimism and purpose, setting the tone for the students’ journey at Presidency University.
