SOD Masterclass Explores the Psychology of Visual Design
The School of Design successfully organised an academic Masterclass, “Exploring Geometry, Shape, Colour and Psychology,” offering students an interdisciplinary exploration of how geometric forms, shapes, colours and visual compositions influence human perception, emotions, behaviour and communication.
The Masterclass examined the relationship between fundamental 2D visual elements and psychological responses. Students explored how different shapes and geometric structures can communicate ideas such as stability, movement, balance, energy, softness and authority. Colour was also examined as a powerful visual element that can influence mood, attention, perception and emotional response.
Through demonstrations, visual analysis, discussions and practical activities, students actively experimented with geometric forms, colour combinations and compositions, while exploring their psychological associations. These activities strengthened their conceptual understanding of visual language and its applications across art and design.
The session also encouraged students to critically consider how visual choices can influence viewers and how designers and artists can intentionally use geometry, shape and colour to create specific experiences and communicate meaningful ideas.
The Masterclass provided students with valuable practical and conceptual insights into the relationship between visual elements, psychology and design, further enriching their understanding of visual communication.
