SOD Fashion Design Students Explore Kerala’s Craft Heritage

14-October-2026

Fashion Design students from the Presidency School of Design (SOD) embarked on an inspiring industrial visit to Sargaalaya Arts and Crafts Village and Tasara in Beypore, Kerala, gaining first-hand exposure to India’s rich craft, textile and artisan heritage.

At Sargaalaya Arts and Crafts Village, students explored traditional handicrafts, handloom practices, indigenous materials, surface ornamentation and artisan-led production. Interactions with skilled artisans provided valuable insights into traditional techniques, production processes, industry challenges and the importance of preserving India’s rich craft knowledge.

At Tasara, Beypore, students experienced the fascinating intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. They explored how indigenous materials, textures, colours, motifs and techniques can be reinterpreted to create relevant contemporary fashion and lifestyle products.

The visit went beyond observation; it was an opportunity to learn from the skilled hands that preserve our heritage.

The experience encouraged students to think critically about sustainability, ethical production, cultural sensitivity, responsible design and the preservation of indigenous knowledge, while exploring innovative ways to integrate traditional crafts into contemporary fashion.

From artisan hands to designer minds, the journey connected heritage with innovation and tradition with tomorrow.
