Advanced Typography for Communication Designers

The School of Design (SOD) organised a three-day workshop titled Advanced Typography for Communication Designers for the 6th Semester B.Des. (Communication Design) students, with participation from other interested students of the School. The workshop was conducted by Ms Mandira Naidoo, Creative Director and Design Head at Red Bangle.

The workshop aimed to strengthen students’ conceptual clarity and applied understanding of typography as a core design system across communication design disciplines. It emphasised typography not as a decorative element, but as a foundational structure that shapes visual hierarchy, storytelling, motion and user engagement.

Through a combination of conceptual discussions and hands-on exercises, the sessions effectively bridged theory and practice. Students engaged in exploratory exercises and practical outputs that encouraged critical thinking, experimentation and the strategic application of typographic principles in diverse communication contexts.

The workshop provided participants with deeper insight into the structural and expressive potential of typography, equipping them with skills essential for contemporary communication design practice.
