The Legal Services Clinic of Presidency University, School of Law, in association with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Bengaluru Rural, organized a Legal Awareness Program on Prisoners’ Rights at the Open Prison, Devanahalli, Bengaluru (Karnataka) which also houses a well-equipped Prison Legal Aid Cell.
The Law students had the opportunity of getting valuable insights from Shri Mohan Kumar, Superintendent of Police (S.P.) who explained in detail how the prison, that was one of its kind, works. He also briefed the students about the various reformative initiatives being applied in the open prison to train the inmates in various skills related to agriculture, dairy etc to enable and empower them to lead a dignified life once they are released.
The students visited the barracks and interacted with a few prisoners. Through the awareness program the prisoners were briefed about the role of DLSA in providing free legal services to the needy and were informed that the Prison Legal Aid Clinic (PLAC) could be approached for any kind of legal assistance.
