Exploring Gender Through Cinema: Super Deluxe Screening

13-November-2025

Presidency School of Liberal Arts & Sciences organised the second film screening of the semester with the critically acclaimed Tamil film Super Deluxe (2019) on November 13, 2025. This screening was as a part of the open elective course “ENG1909 / Exploring Gender: Narratives from Campus to Community”, which attracted students from across all programmes.

The screening was part of the course’s experiential pedagogy, using cinema to explore gender identities, queer narratives, and media politics.

Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Super Deluxe prompted reflections on gender, sexuality, morality, and the lived experiences of a trans woman—aligning with Module 4 on Gender and LGBTQIA+ Identities.

Students engaged in an open-floor discussion, linking the film’s themes to readings such as Facing the Mirror and Yaraana and examining how it challenges binaries and social norms.

The activity builds on previous film-based learning and reflects SOLAS’s commitment to inclusive, critically aware classrooms. It was coordinated by Dr. Ahmed Shabin KK (IC) and Dr. Clarence Victor Fernandes.
