The Department of Petroleum Engineering, Presidency School of Engineering, organised a Career Guidance Session on “Campus to Corporate – Navigating the Transition to Professional Success” as part of the PetroTalk – Alumni–Students Interaction on 14 August 2026, from 3:00 pm to 4:15 pm at Seminar Hall 1.
The session was delivered by Mr Joseph Varghese, Engineer – Process, Shell India Markets Private Limited, Chennai, and an alumnus of the 2015–2019 batch.
The Career Guidance Session was designed to help B.Tech. Petroleum Engineering students understand the transition from academic life to professional careers. The interaction provided a platform for students to engage with an alumnus and industry professional, gaining practical insights into career pathways, employability, workplace expectations, professional competencies and long-term career development.
The session focused on the competencies and skills expected by employers, including technical knowledge, communication skills, adaptability, internships, career planning, interview preparation, workplace ethics, leadership, multidisciplinary teamwork and lifelong learning. The interaction enabled students to relate their academic preparation to the practical requirements of the professional environment.
A key emphasis of PetroTalk was strengthening students’ career readiness. The session highlighted that professional success extends beyond technical expertise and requires effective communication, ethical conduct, adaptability, teamwork, leadership and a commitment to continuous learning. Students were also introduced to opportunities in internships, higher education, innovation, entrepreneurship and professional development within the evolving petroleum and energy industry.
Overall, PetroTalk served as a valuable career-guidance and alumni-engagement initiative, helping students gain a broader understanding of professional expectations and career opportunities in the petroleum and energy sector. The programme enhanced industry awareness and career preparedness while strengthening the connection between students, alumni, academia and industry, contributing to the development of professionally competent and industry-ready graduates.
