The Rise of Short-Form Video: Reels, Shorts, and TikTok Trends Among Students

Digital trends and digital media are constantly evolving. The type of content that we consume today may entirely change in the coming few years. One of the most noticeable shifts that we have witness today is the rise of short form content. From Instagram reels to YouTube shorts, short form content is on the rise. It is altering the way people consume and create media content.
A short form content generally refers to a video content typically under 60-90 seconds, sometimes extending up to three minutes. These videos are created in a way that they are fast, flashy, visually attractive and deliver the desired information or entertainment within seconds. Unlike traditional content on YouTube or television, where the videos are long and elaborate short form videos are focused on impact and immediacy.
One of the major factors behind the rise of short form content is the decreasing attention span of the viewers. The longer the video, the more likely the audience will scroll past it. Short form videos are made precisely to cater this viewing pattern. With their engaging visuals, catchy music and bite-sized storytelling, these videos provide quick dopamine fix, exactly what the modern audience seeks. These videos often rely on creative techniques such as surprise elements, engaging storyline, viral audio, trending memes and aesthetic filters to grab attention of the viewers in the initial few seconds. The ability of the short form videos to hold attention is what sets them apart from the traditional long format videos.
Another reason for the popularity of short form content is accessibility. Creating such content does not require extensive setup or expensive equipment. Even students with limited resources can easily create short form content. The growing demand for short form content is evident in the marketing world. Brands are increasingly using short form content to market their products and services. They are collaborating with influencers and content creators to engage with audiences in easy and relatable ways. Short-form videos not only boost engagement but also drive trends, making them one of the most powerful tools in today’s digital communication landscape.
