Railway Jobs After 12th: Options, Eligibility and Exams
A secure government job is a common hope in many families, and Indian Railways recruits on a large scale. Students often ask: which railway jobs after 12th can I apply for now, and which need an ITI, diploma or degree first? Some posts open with Class 12, some need technical training and a few accept Class 10. This guide uses the Railway Recruitment Boards' (RRB) notices current in October 2026. Always read the latest notice before you apply.
Railway career options after Class 12
Recruitment at these levels falls into three groups:
- Non-technical posts: clerical, accounts, ticketing and train operations support. These are recruited through the NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) Undergraduate examination, which needs Class 12
- Technical posts: Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician. These need Class 10 plus an ITI or Act Apprenticeship in a specified trade, or an engineering diploma. Class 12 on its own does not qualify
- Level 1 posts: track, workshop and support roles open to Class 10 pass candidates, so Class 12 students can also apply

Pay is the starting basic pay in the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix, before allowances. Age limits are the general limits for each notice; reserved categories receive relaxation.
Eligibility criteria
Education. For the four NTPC Undergraduate posts, CEN 07/2026 asks for Class 12 or equivalent with at least 50% aggregate marks. The 50% condition does not apply to SC and ST candidates, persons with benchmark disabilities, ex-servicemen and candidates with qualifications higher than Class 12. You must hold the qualification by the closing date; candidates still awaiting results should not apply.
Age. NTPC Undergraduate applicants must be 18–30 years old on 1 January 2027. The upper limit is relaxed by five years for SC and ST candidates and three years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates, with further relaxation for persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen.
Medical standards. Every post has a medical category. Assistant Loco Pilot requires the A-1 standard, which includes unaided 6/6 vision without spectacles or contact lenses. Trains Clerk requires A-3, and the two clerk-cum-typist posts require C-2.
Post-specific rules. Technical posts accept only the trades listed in the notice, so an ITI in an unlisted trade will not qualify.
Railway recruitment exams
- RRB NTPC (Undergraduate): CEN 07/2026 notified 1,688 vacancies across all RRBs. Online applications opened on 15 October 2026 and close on 13 November 2026
- RRB ALP: CEN 01/2026 notified 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot vacancies
- RRB Technician: CEN 02/2026 covered Technician Grade I Signal, which needs a B.Sc. in subjects such as Physics, Electronics or Computer Science, or an engineering diploma or degree in those streams, and many Grade III trades
- Level 1: CEN 09/2025 notified 22,195 vacancies; applications closed on 9 March 2026, after the original 2 March deadline was extended
A closed notice is a guide to the next cycle, not an open opportunity.
Selection process
NTPC Undergraduate. A first-stage computer-based test (CBT) of 100 questions in 90 minutes (about 40 on general awareness, 30 on mathematics and 30 on general intelligence and reasoning), then a second-stage CBT of 120 questions, followed by document verification and a medical examination. One-third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer. The typing skill test has been dropped for CEN 07/2026, but typing proficiency will be assessed after joining.
Assistant Loco Pilot. Two CBTs, then a Computer Based Aptitude Test, document verification and a medical examination.
Level 1. A CBT, a Physical Efficiency Test, document verification and a medical examination.
Exam preparation strategy
- Syllabus: Use the topic list printed in the CEN itself, not a generic list
- Practice: Solve mathematics and reasoning questions daily, focusing on accuracy because of negative marking
- Mock tests: RRBs publish official mock test links before examinations; take them to learn the interface
- Fitness: For Level 1 posts, train for the Physical Efficiency Test well in advance
How to apply safely
- Use only the official site. All 21 RRB websites have been merged into the unified RRB website, and CEN 07/2026 warns candidates to beware of fake websites
- Choose one RRB. For each notice you may apply to only one RRB. Applying to more than one leads to rejection and debarment
- Know the fee. For CEN 07/2026 the fee is ₹500, of which ₹400 is refunded after you appear in the first CBT. SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and EBC candidates pay ₹250, refunded after the first CBT
- Ignore promises. Selection is strictly on merit
Career growth
Selected candidates undergo training where prescribed, with a stipend. After confirmation, staff can move up through departmental promotions and internal examinations under each department's rules. CEN 07/2026 also notes that transfer requests to another railway are registered only after five to 10 years of service, so choose your RRB with care.
If you would rather study first, an engineering qualification opens higher-level posts. RRB Junior Engineer recruitment (CEN 04/2026, Level 6, ₹35,400 starting basic pay) accepted a three-year engineering diploma or a bachelor's degree in engineering. Degrees such as B.Tech Mechanical Engineering and B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Presidency University need Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics and at least 45% in the relevant subjects (40% for reserved categories).
