Professional Courses After 12th: CA, Law, Health and Engineering Routes

Professional Courses After 12th: CA, Law, Health and Engineering Routes

Some careers let anyone with the right skills apply. Others are professions: you can only call yourself a chartered accountant, an advocate or a physiotherapist after meeting standards set by a professional body or regulator. A professional course is the route into one of these protected titles. It usually takes longer than a general degree, but it gives you a recognised qualification that employers and clients trust.

This guide lists the main professional courses after 12th, the body that governs each one, and what you must clear before you can practise.

What makes a course “professional”?

A professional course leads to a defined profession with its own entry rules. In most cases, three things are involved:

  • A recognised qualification, such as a law degree, a physiotherapy degree or a professional institute's examinations.
  • Supervised practice, such as articleship, clinical internship or legal practice.
  • Membership, enrolment or registration with a professional body or regulator, which lets you use the title and practise.

A course that simply teaches job skills is valuable too, but it is different. If you want the fastest route to employment through skills-focused degrees and short courses, see our guide to job-oriented courses after 12th.

Professional courses by Class 12 stream

Science (PCM): engineering (Physics and Mathematics required, usually with Chemistry or another listed science) and architecture through NATA or JEE Main Paper 2. CA, CS, CMA, ACCA and law are also open to you.

Science (PCB): medicine through NEET-UG, and physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical imaging and other allied-health professions. These need Physics, Chemistry and Biology; Presidency University's BPT, for example, asks for 50% in these subjects. CA, CS, CMA, ACCA and law are also open to you.

Commerce: CA, CS, CMA and ACCA are the classic professional routes, and many students pair them with a B.Com so they hold a degree as well. These qualifications accept Class 12 students from any stream, but commerce students already know the basics of accounting. For a step-by-step CA plan, read our guide on how to become a CA after 12th.

Arts: law is the main professional route, and CA, CS, CMA and ACCA are also open to you. Integrated law programmes at Presidency University accept students from any stream with 45% in Class 12.

Source: AmbitionBox self-reported salaries, accessed 26 September 2026. Averages cover all experience levels; qualifications such as CA, CS and CMA take several years to complete, and freshers usually start lower. Independent practice in law and healthcare can earn considerably more with experience. The figures describe each job role across all employees, not the result of any particular degree or university.

How to choose the right professional course

Three questions narrow the list quickly:

  • Can you commit to the full route? Professional qualifications often take four to five years, with exams that many students need more than one attempt to clear.
  • Do you enjoy the daily work? Shadow a chartered accountant during audit season, sit in a district court or visit a physiotherapy clinic before deciding.
  • Does the course prepare you for the regulator's requirements? Check that the degree is recognised and that the university helps with internships, articleship or clinical postings.

Frequently asked questions

What is a professional course after 12th?

It is a course that leads to a recognised profession, such as CA, law or physiotherapy, where a professional body or regulator controls entry and the right to practise.

Which professional course is best after 12th?

It depends on your stream and interests. Commerce students often choose CA, CS or ACCA; Biology students choose physiotherapy or allied health; any stream can choose law.

What is the difference between professional and job-oriented courses?

A professional course leads to a regulated title with exams, supervised practice and registration. A job-oriented course focuses on skills employers hire for, often with a shorter route to the first job.

Which professional course has the highest salary?

Among the careers above, chartered accountancy and company secretaryship report the highest averages, but both need years of exams and training.

Can I do a degree and a professional course together?

Yes. Many students study a B.Com alongside CA, CS, CMA or ACCA, and integrated programmes are designed to support both.

The best professional course is one whose full route you understand before you start. Compare the regulator's rules, the degree that supports them and the practical training you will receive.
