MBA Eligibility: Qualifications and Entrance Exams
Final-year students often reach the same worried questions at the same time: Can I apply before my results are out? Is my percentage high enough? Will a lack of work experience count against me? MBA eligibility is less complicated than it first appears. Most programmes check four things: your degree, your marks, an entrance score where required and, for some formats, work experience. This guide explains each one, so you can plan before application windows open.
MBA eligibility overview
For a regular two-year MBA in India, the usual MBA eligibility criteria are:
- A bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration in any discipline
- A minimum aggregate, commonly 50%, with relaxation for reserved categories
- A degree from a university or institution recognised in India; foreign degrees may need equivalence from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
- A valid entrance test score where the institution requires one
Presidency University’s MBA programme pages, including the MBA with specialisations, ask for a bachelor’s degree of at least three years with at least 50% marks, or 45% for candidates from reserved categories.
Academic qualifications
Graduates from any stream can usually apply: B.Com, BBA, B.Sc., B.Tech, BCA, B.A. and others. Presidency’s MBA Finance FAQ, for example, states that a commerce background is not compulsory for that specialisation. Students without a business background may find accounting or statistics demanding in the first semester, but that is a matter of preparation, not eligibility.
Final-year students can usually apply for entrance tests and admission. Admission is then provisional until you submit proof that you have completed your degree with the required marks by a date the institution sets. CAT, for example, allows final-year candidates to appear on this basis. Check each institution’s rule for your intake.
Minimum percentage and relaxation
The minimum percentage is set by each institution and each entrance test, so check both.
Requirement | Minimum marks in graduation |
Presidency University MBA | 50% (45% for reserved categories) |
50% or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates)
Other institutes and state tests | Set by the institution or state authority, with their own category relaxations |
If your university awards a CGPA, use its official conversion formula to state your percentage. Rounding up a figure on an application can lead to an offer being cancelled at verification.
MBA entrance exams
Most management institutes accept one or more national or state tests. The main options, with dates as of October 2026, are:
Exam | Conducted by | Current cycle |
IIMs | Test day 29 November 2026
XLRI | 3 January 2027; registration closes 6 December 2026
All India Management Association | December 2026 sessions: 20 December (paper-based) and 27 December (computer-based)
GMAC | Testing window 2 November–20 December 2026; registration closed 25 October 2026
National Testing Agency | 2026 results declared; 2027 schedule not yet announced
Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) | Offered year-round, at test centres and online
Karnataka Private Post Graduate Colleges Association (KPPGCA) | 14 November 2026
Karnataka Examinations Authority | 2027 schedule not yet announced |
Presidency’s MBA programme pages list CAT, CMAT, MAT, KMAT and PGCET MBA among the scores it considers. Confirm with the admissions office whether a score is required for your intake. The GMAT deserves particular attention: many Indian business schools accept it, and it is the standard admission test for most international MBA programmes, so it keeps both Indian and overseas options open. Because it runs year-round, you can choose a test date that fits your application deadlines. For syllabus, pattern and preparation details, see our full list of MBA entrance exams in India.
Work experience requirements
Work experience is not required for most full-time two-year MBA programmes. Presidency’s MBA Finance page states that graduates can apply directly. Some institutes give credit for experience during shortlisting, because it adds depth to class discussion and placements. Executive MBA programmes are different: they are designed for working professionals and set a minimum number of years of experience.
Eligibility by MBA format
Full-time MBA: a bachelor’s degree, minimum marks and, where required, an entrance score.
Executive MBA: a bachelor’s degree plus several years of work experience, as set by the institute; classes are often on weekends or in blocks.
Online MBA: check that the university is entitled by the University Grants Commission to offer the programme online. The UGC Distance Education Bureau publishes the list of entitled institutions.
Integrated MBA: a five-year programme that admits students after Class 12, usually through a separate aptitude test and interview. Eligibility is based on Class 12 marks, not a degree.
MBA admission process
1. Shortlist programmes. Compare curriculum, specialisations, faculty, total cost and verified placement data.
2. Take the entrance test. Register early; most tests close applications weeks before the test date.
3. Apply to each institution. Many institutes need a separate application even when they accept a common test.
4. Shortlisting. Institutes combine test scores, academic record and sometimes work experience.
5. Interview stage. Expect a personal interview and, at some institutes, a group discussion or written ability test.
6. Final selection. Offers are made on composite scores, followed by document verification and fee payment.
Documents and verification
Keep these ready in original and scanned form:
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates
- Degree mark sheets for all semesters, or a provisional certificate
- Entrance test scorecard
- Identity proof and passport-size photographs
- Category, EWS or disability certificate, if claiming relaxation
- Work experience letters, if applicable
- Equivalence certificate for a foreign degree, if applicable
