Liberal Arts Bachelor Degree: Courses, Subjects, Eligibility, Scope and Career Options

Liberal Arts Bachelor Degree: Courses, Subjects, Eligibility, Scope and Career Options

Many Class 12 students enjoy more than one subject and do not want to give up the others at 17. You may like psychology and economics, or history and political science, and have no idea yet which one should lead to a career. A liberal arts bachelor degree is designed for exactly that situation. It lets you explore widely first and then specialise, without losing the depth a good degree needs.

What is a liberal arts bachelor degree?

A liberal arts degree is an undergraduate programme that combines the humanities, social sciences and, often, the creative arts. Instead of studying one subject from the first day, you begin with a broad foundation and then choose one or two majors. The aim is to build thinking, writing, research and communication skills that transfer across fields.

In India, the degree is usually awarded as a B.A. (a “BA liberal arts” or “bachelor of liberal arts” in search terms), and some universities also offer a B.Sc. version. The National Education Policy 2020 calls for holistic, multidisciplinary undergraduate education with “creative combinations of disciplines”, which is the liberal arts model.

A liberal arts degree suits students who want to compare subjects before committing, or who see a career at the meeting point of two fields, such as policy (political science and economics) or media (communication and English). For a wider list of B.A. subjects, see our guide to the BA subjects list and specialisations.

Liberal arts courses and subjects

Liberal arts subjects fall into three broad groups:

  • Humanities: English and literature, history, philosophy and languages
  • Social sciences: psychology, political science, economics and sociology
  • Creative and performing arts: media, theatre, music and dance

Each university decides which subjects it offers and how they can be combined. Presidency University's B.A. programme regulations for 2026–2029 show one version of the model:

Stage

What you study

Foundation

Six shared courses: Personality and Individual Differences, Economic Perspectives, Foundations of Social Sciences, Introduction to Performance Culture, Introduction to Media Literacy and Popular Narratives

Two disciplines

Core courses in the two disciplines you choose, 32 credits each. The regulations list eleven: Psychology, English, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Communication and Media, History, Theatre Studies and three performing arts streams

Electives

Discipline-specific electives, such as Psychological Testing and Measurement or Digital Humanities

Skills

A foreign language (French, German or Spanish), Strategic Communication, Academic Writing, and Digital Fluency and AI

Practice

An internship of six to eight weeks and a capstone project

The degree totals 120 credits over three years. Presidency University publishes specific pairings, such as B.A. (Political Science & Economics), B.A. (Psychology, English) and B.A. (English & Political Science). You can see all of them on the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences programme page.

Eligibility and duration

Eligibility: Most liberal arts programmes accept students from any Class 12 stream. At Presidency University, the published B.A. combinations ask for Class 12 or equivalent from a recognised board with at least 45% marks, and Arts, Science and Commerce students can all apply. Other universities may add an entrance test, an interview or a written statement, so check each admission notice.

Duration: Presidency University's liberal arts B.A. programmes take three years. Under NEP 2020, universities may also offer four-year undergraduate degrees, with honours or research options in the final year. Check the programme regulations for the exact duration, credits and exit options.

How to choose your two majors

Start with the questions you enjoy thinking about, not the subject that sounds most employable. Then test the choice against three checks:

  • Do the two subjects strengthen each other? Psychology with economics supports behavioural and market research. History with political science supports public policy and civil services preparation.
  • Does one subject give you a method? Economics, psychology and sociology teach research and data skills that employers can see on a CV.
  • Is there a professional route you might need later? Clinical psychology, for example, needs a further RCI-recognised qualification. Our guide on how to become a psychologist explains that route.

Scope of a liberal arts degree in India

A liberal arts degree does not lead to one job title, and that is both its strength and its challenge. Graduates work in media, research, policy, education, human resources, communication and the social sector. They also go on to postgraduate study, such as an M.A., an MBA, a law degree or a master's in public policy.

The challenge is that employers hire for skills they can see. Use the three years to build evidence, such as an internship, a research paper, a writing portfolio or a data project.

Pay in these fields grows with experience, specialisation and postgraduate study. Many liberal arts graduates also prepare for the civil services, for which any bachelor's degree is accepted. Frequently asked questions

Is a liberal arts degree the same as a B.A.?

In India, most liberal arts degrees are awarded as a B.A., but not every B.A. is a liberal arts degree. A liberal arts B.A. starts with a broad foundation and usually combines two disciplines.

Can Science or Commerce students study liberal arts?

Yes. Most programmes accept any stream. Presidency University's liberal arts B.A. combinations accept Arts, Science and Commerce students with at least 45% in Class 12.

How many years is a liberal arts bachelor degree?

It is usually three or four years. Presidency University's programmes take three years and require 120 credits.

Is liberal arts a good career choice?

It can be, if you enjoy several subjects and are willing to build practical skills alongside your degree. It is less suited to students who want a fixed route into one licensed profession.

What jobs can I get after a liberal arts degree?

Common routes include communication, journalism, research, human resources, policy and the social sector, or postgraduate study.

A liberal arts bachelor degree rewards curiosity, but it works best with a plan. Choose two disciplines that interest you, use your internship and capstone to build evidence, and compare the current liberal arts programmes at Presidency University before you apply.
