Government Jobs After LLB: Roles, Exams and Career Scope

Government Jobs After LLB: Roles, Exams and Career Scope

An LLB can lead to several forms of public service. A judge, prosecutor, government legal officer and civil servant all work within the public system, but they enter through different selection processes and use different skills. Begin with the role, then work backward through its current eligibility rules.

Why consider a government legal career?

Public roles can involve applying law to disputes, advising departments, protecting public funds or administering policy. They may offer a defined pay structure and progression, but competition and the nature of work vary widely. The attraction should be the work itself as well as stability. Many of these roles also offer a rare chance to shape how law is applied to thousands of people at once.

Government job options after LLB

Judicial services lead to court roles through state recruitment. The practice rule for Civil Judge (Junior Division) changed twice in two years. On 20 May 2025, the Supreme Court restored a three-year practice requirement. On 21 August 2026, in Bhumika Trust v. Union of India (2026 INSC 904), it modified that rule:

  • Notifications issued up to 31 March 2027: all law graduates can apply and are treated as having one year of practice. Selected candidates become Trainee Judicial Officers and complete one year of training at the State Judicial Academy and one year of law clerkship before regular appointment.
  • Notifications issued on or after 1 April 2027: you need at least one year of actual practice, backed by a Certificate of Practice, and then the same two years of training and clerkship.

States have been asked to amend their rules within three months of the judgment, and the scheme runs for five years. Read the current High Court or state public service commission notification for the exact conditions before you apply.

Public prosecution involves representing the state in criminal proceedings. Appointment and experience conditions depend on the role and the applicable law. The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 contains the framework for public prosecutors, while recruitment is carried out by the relevant authority.

Government legal officers advise departments, draft documents, review contracts and handle disputes. PSU and public-sector bank legal roles can focus on lending, recovery, procurement, compliance or litigation. Legal research and legislative work may involve drafting and policy analysis. Civil services are open to eligible graduates and can lead to administrative roles; an LLB can be an advantage in understanding law but is not a substitute for the exam.

Exams and recruitment routes

Judicial services generally use a state-specific examination and interview. Legal officer and PSU posts may use a written test, interview or experience-based selection. Civil services use the UPSC process or the relevant state commission. Government departments can also engage advocates through panels or empanelment rather than permanent employment. The recruitment notice tells you which route applies.

Government legal jobs in Karnataka

For students planning to work in Karnataka, two routes are especially relevant. The High Court of Karnataka conducts recruitment for Civil Judges, and the state's prosecution department recruits Assistant Public Prosecutors through its own notifications. State-level posts may also test proficiency in the regional language and knowledge of state laws, so read the syllabus closely. Bengaluru's concentration of courts, tribunals, PSUs and public-sector bank offices also creates regular openings for legal officers and panel advocates.

Eligibility and skills

An eligible law degree is the starting point. Depending on the post, you may also need Bar Council enrolment, practice experience, a Certificate of Practice or experience in a particular area. The All India Bar Examination portal publishes current information on the Certificate of Practice process. Check the exact vacancy rather than assuming every government legal job has identical requirements.

Across routes, useful skills include legal research, statutory interpretation, clear drafting, procedure, evidence and oral advocacy. A prosecutor and a contract lawyer use these in different ways, so prepare for the actual work.

How to prepare

Select one target role. Obtain its latest syllabus or vacancy notice. Build a study plan around substantive law, procedure, recent developments and past papers. Practise drafting a short legal note, not only recalling sections. If the role requires experience, seek supervised litigation or relevant legal work and keep proof of it.

Career growth and salary scope

Judicial and salaried government roles follow their published pay scales and service rules. Panel advocates may be paid fees under an empanelment arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Which government jobs are available after LLB?

Judicial, prosecution, legal officer, PSU, public-sector bank, legislative and civil-service routes are possible, subject to their separate conditions.

Can an LLB graduate become a judge?

Yes, through the state judicial service exam. Under the Supreme Court's ruling of 21 August 2026, fresh law graduates can apply for Civil Judge (Junior Division) posts notified up to 31 March 2027; for notifications from 1 April 2027, you need one year of actual practice. Selected candidates then complete a year of training and a year of law clerkship. Verify the current state notification.

How can I become a public prosecutor?

Complete an eligible law degree, meet the required enrolment and practice conditions, and apply through the relevant government's recruitment or appointment process.

Are PSU legal jobs available to fresh graduates?

Some may be, but many ask for practice or specialist experience. Check the current vacancy rather than assuming eligibility.

Which exam should I prepare for?

Choose the job first. Judicial service, UPSC, a state commission and a PSU legal test have different syllabi and career outcomes.

The strongest plan is specific. Decide how you want to use law in public service, then verify the latest rule for that exact post before investing months in preparation. If you are still choosing a law degree, compare the five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) at Presidency University, or specialise further with the LL.M. programme.
