BA LLB Course Details: Eligibility, Exams and Careers

If you enjoy history and political science, follow Parliament debates and argue about the news at dinner, someone has probably suggested law. These BA LLB course details cover who can apply, which entrance exams count, what you will study and where the degree leads, so that you and your parents can judge whether the B.A. LL.B. suits you. To compare the two main integrated law degrees, see our BA LLB vs BBA LLB comparison.

What is BA LLB?

The B.A. LL.B. is a five-year integrated degree, usually taught over 10 semesters, that combines a Bachelor of Arts with a Bachelor of Laws: political science, sociology and economics run alongside core law. To practise as an advocate, you enrol with a State Bar Council and pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). At Presidency University, the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) adds honours electives in the later years.

BA LLB eligibility

Any Class 12 stream qualifies: Science, Commerce or Arts.

  • Minimum marks: 45% for CLAT 2027 (40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), set by the Consortium of National Law Universities. Presidency University asks for 45% aggregate, or 40% for SC and ST applicants under its 2026–31 programme regulations
  • Age: no upper limit for CLAT 2027; Presidency asks candidates older than 20 on 1 July of the admission year for an undertaking

Entrance exams and admission

  • CLAT: used by member National Law Universities and accepted by many other institutions. The Consortium's press release of 22 July 2026 sets CLAT 2027 for 6 December 2026; check the Consortium website for the current application window
  • AILET: National Law University Delhi's own test; its admission portal lists AILET 2027 for December 2026
  • University tests: many universities run their own test or interview

Presidency University names CLAT and its own Presidency Admission Test (PAT) among the accepted tests, with a minimum cut-off score. See the enrolment process page and our CLAT preparation strategy.

The arts subjects add an understanding of how institutions, social groups and the economy shape the law, which helps in constitutional, criminal and public-interest work.

Career options

  • Litigation: district courts, High Courts and tribunals, after enrolment and the AIBE
  • Judiciary: state judicial services examinations, after meeting the practice rules; see our guide to how to become a judge in India
  • Corporate law and compliance: law firms and in-house legal teams
  • Civil services and policy: the arts subjects overlap with parts of several government examination syllabi, though selection depends on the examination
  • Further study: an LL.M. or research with think tanks and legal publishers
