AI in Massive MIMO and Smart Beamforming for 5G and 6G Networks

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and smart beamforming form the backbone of 5G and future 6G networks, offering unparalleled spectral efficiency, high data rates, and enhanced user connectivity. Exponential growth in wireless data, IoT device explosion, and new applications in the form of augmented reality (AR) and autonomous vehicles require sophisticated signal processing techniques. However, conventional massive MIMO and beamforming algorithms are based on sophisticated mathematical models, iterative optimisation, and exhaustive beam searching, resulting in high computational complexity and latency. Artificial intelligence (AI), especially machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), is transforming these areas significantly by offering data-driven, adaptive, and low-complexity solutions to beamforming optimisation, channel estimation, and network management.
In massive MIMO systems, AI techniques improve many aspects of wireless communications like channel estimation, precoding, user scheduling, and power control. Further, reinforcement learning (RL) approaches have also been utilised to adaptively vary power levels and beamforming weights in massive MIMO systems, which leads to spectral efficiency gain and energy saving.
In 6G networks, AI-enabled intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) and holographic beamforming will further expedite wireless communication by actively controlling the radio propagation medium. AI-optimal algorithms are capable of re-tuning the IRS elements optimally to get the maximum signal power with the least interference, leading to improved network coverage and energy efficiency. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have also been explored for multi-user beamforming optimisation in massive MIMO, enabling efficient spectrum usage in ultra-dense networks.
The future research must be focused on the design of lightweight AI models, the application of federated learning for distributed intelligence, and the exploration of quantum-assisted AI techniques for ultra-fast beamforming optimisation in 6G networks. The combination of AI and future emerging communication technologies will unleash the complete potential of massive MIMO and intelligent beamforming, which will make ultra-reliable, low-latency, and high-capacity wireless networks a reality.
AI in Massive MIMO and Smart Beamforming for 5G and 6G Networks is revolutionising the landscape of Electronics and Communication Engineering. These advanced technologies enable intelligent signal processing, adaptive beam steering, and efficient spectrum utilisation, laying the foundation for ultra-reliable and high-capacity wireless communication.
