World Environment Day 5th June, 2019
The World Environment Day was celebrated at Presidency University in the presence of the noted environmentalist and Padmashree award winner, Salumarada Thimmakka and Mrs. Usha Narayanan, who is spearheading the campaign of Plastic Free Rajanakunte.
It was a very touching moment for the audience comprising students, faculty and other staff members of the university to see in person the very reputed lady who is also known as The Tree Mother. The event started with planting of a sapling by Smt Salumarada Thimmakka at the university campus. Tree plantation program was organized by NSS Unit of Presidency University headed by Prof. Renuka Bhagwat.
Speaking at a formal function in the university auditorium, Smt Thimmakka said that she started planting trees in order to escape the stigma of not being able to bear children decades ago. She conveyed her best wishes to the faculty and students of the university.
Environment activist, Smt. Usha Narayanan of Plastic Free Rajanakunte spoke about the need for stopping the use of plastic in our daily life.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Radha Padmanabhan welcomed the gathering of faculty and students. Vice Chancellor lauded the contribution of both Salumarada Thimmakka and Smt Usha Narayanan in protecting our environment.
Following the addresses, a quiz was conducted on environmental issues which was participated by faculty and students alike.
Rendition of theme based songs enthralled the audience. Before the event, the students participated in a placard making competition and the placards were handed over to Smt Usha Narayanan for use in her Plastic Free Rajanakunte campaign.
Vice Chancellor appreciated the collaborative efforts of the Students Welfare Department and the NSS Chapter and the Environment Cell in making the event a grand success.
