Two Days Workshop on “Data Analysis using R for Academic Research” held on March 6-7, 2020

School of Management, Presidency University, organized a Two days’ Workshop on “Data Analysis using R for Academic Research” on March 6-7, 2020. The workshop had 29 participants from various academic disciplines and Industry.

Day 1
Day 2
Session 1:
Dr. Vengalarao Pachava introduced the R Programming tool to the participants. The participants were given Hands on training on how to install R and R Studio. The basic concepts like datatypes, data structures, operations, importing data etc were discussed.

Session 2:
Dr. Balanagarajan introduced the concepts of Data Preprocessing and Data Visualization to the participants followed by Hands on session with some datasets. The participants were trained on how to represent the data in various visual forms. Do’s & Don’ts of the creating visualization was discussed.

Session 3:
Post Lunch, Dr. Vengalarao Pachava explained the various Exploratory Data Analysis techniques to the participants. The participants were provided with datasets and they practiced. The participants were trained on extracting the required information and handle different data analysis techniques.

Session 4:
Participants were asked to practice and then both workshop coordinators clarified all the doubts asked by participants.

Session 1:
Dr. Balanagarajan started day two with a recap of the concepts discussed in Day 1. Then the participants were provided hands on training to perform various parametric and non-parametric statistical tests with some sample datasets. The participants were trained to interpret and infer the statistical tests results.

Session 2:
Dr. Vengalarao Pachava trained the participants on developing models based on the data and he provided various inputs on how to evaluate a model and reconstruct a model. The participants developed their own models on the datasets provided and interpreted the results.

Session 3:
Post lunch Dr. Balanagarajan provided hands-on training on report generation and publishing with R Markdown. Then both the workshop coordinators clarified all the doubts asked by participants.


After session 3 on day 2, the participant feedback was collected and the
certificates were distributed to all the participants followed by High Tea
and Photo Session. The workshop ended with Vote of Thanks by Dr. Vengalarao
Pachava, Workshop Coordinator.

Before the workshop began on the first day, there was an inauguration by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Radha Padmanabhan. Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of ‘R’ as tool for academic research and wished
the participants have a fruitful learning experience and also congratulated the Workshop Coordinators. Prof. Dr. Krishna Kumar, HoD, School of Management welcomed the participants from different parts of India. Prof.
Dr. Ishwar Bhat, Pro-Vice Chancellor addressed the gathering with his valuable insights about the origin of ‘R’ Programming tool and its usage in different academic disciplines. The inaugural ended with Vote of Thanks by
Dr. K. Balanagarajan, Workshop Coordinator.

The two days’ workshop was co-ordinated by Dr. K. Balanagarajan & Dr. Vengalarao Pachava and it was supported by GoSurvey, Cengage Learning, Pearson and McGraw Hill.
