International Women’s Day was celebrated in the University on Friday 8th March 2019. A flash mob by NSS volunteers, an informative talk by the Chief Guest Smt. Meera Saksena, ex Chairperson, Karnataka, State Human Rights Commission, skit performances by students and faculty and a ramp walk by the staff members of the university marked the event. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Radha Padmanabhan, Prof. Krishna Kumar, Deans, faculty and students of the university participated in the event.
The program began with NSS volunteers displaying a flash mob on women empowerment in the canopy, and a power packed performance of Shakti dance by students in the auditorium. Dean , School of Law, Dr Sapna introduced and welcomed the Chief Guest Smt Meera Saksena.
Skit performance on women empowerment by the students of School of Law kept the audience wondering that the girl child is being discouraged even today. Speaking on the occasion, Smt Meera Saksena shared her experience about the challenges that a woman faces from and before her birth, and how she can stand out if she makes her mind up to achieving something. Though Bangalore is being called the silicon city and has progressed in many ways, there still are few villages in Karnataka where women are ill-treated and are burnt for dowry. Female feticide, malnourishment of both the mother and child, were heart wrenching, added Ms Saxena.
Vice Chancellor Dr Radha Padmanabhan in her address said that given equal opportunity women are no less in any genre and can excel in any department. A musical skit performance by Mr Aurobindo and Prof Sanjay Kumar got roars of laughter and applause for their comic timing. A Carnatic classical by Prof Krishna Kumar kept the audience spellbound. In the end, a ramp walk by the entire faculty and staff in ethnic wears brought huge fun and joy to the event.
Present on the occasion were Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. Ishwara Bhat, Dean of School of Law, Prof. Sapna, Dean Academics Prof. P S Venkataramu, Dean of Research and Innovation Prof. Ramesh, other Deans of the University, faculty members and students. Mr Harsha Eswaraiah and Ms Manni Garg compered the event.
